Why Opt for a Natural Skincare Routine?
Creating your own skincare can be incredibly fun, creative, and empowering. There’s something deeply satisfying about mixing simple ingredients, feeling their textures, and knowing exactly what you’re putting on your skin. When you make your own products, you are fully in control - no hidden ingredients, no confusing labels, just simple and nourishing choices.
That said, choosing natural skincare doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself.
Some things are wonderfully easy to make at home, while others are more time-consuming, require specific knowledge, or simply aren’t as practical to DIY. A simple sugar and oil scrub is extremely easy – and very effective.
A well-balanced, stable, and pleasant face cream, on the other hand, is not always as simple. Creating a cream that has the right texture, absorbs beautifully, and stays fresh over time requires more than just mixing a few ingredients together.
That’s why I personally prefer to DIY the simple things - like scrubs - and rely on trusted brands for products that are more complex. One of my favorites is Weleda Skin Food Light. It’s rich enough to nourish dry skin, yet still lightweight and fast-absorbing. A beautiful option if you want something natural, but professionally formulated and ready to use.
In the end, natural skincare is about thoughtful choices, not complicated routines.
Why Ingredient Awareness Matters
Many people who use commercially manufactured skincare products never stop to question what’s actually in them. Some may be mindful of what they eat, yet apply products containing questionable or unnecessary ingredients directly onto their skin every single day.
Your skin is your largest organ, and what you apply to it matters. Many conventional skincare products contain ingredients that can be irritating, disrupt the skin barrier, or build up over time - especially with long-term use.
- Avoid harsh or irritating substances
- Support your skin’s natural balance
- Make conscious and informed choices
Natural skincare doesn’t have to be complicated - but it does start with knowing what you’re using.
Step 1: Cleansing - Start with the Right Base
Cleansing sets the foundation for your entire skincare routine. Natural oils are excellent cleansers because they dissolve dirt and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.
For dry or sensitive skin
Choose nourishing oils like olive oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil.
Optional add-in: Lavender essential oil for a calming effect.
For oily or combination skin
Lighter oils such as jojoba oil or grapeseed oil help balance oil production naturally.
Optional add-in: Clary sage essential oil.
How to use: Massage a small amount of oil onto dry skin with clean hands, then remove with a warm, damp cloth.
Step 2: Exfoliating - Simple, Fun & Effective
This is where DIY skincare really shines. Exfoliating at home is incredibly easy and requires just one or two ingredients.
A basic scrub made with sugar and oil is one of the simplest - and most effective - ways to refresh your skin.
- Sugar (white or brown): Gentle and effective. Brown sugar is ideal for sensitive skin.
- Sea salt: Best for the body or feet. Avoid using on the face.
- Ground oats: Extremely gentle and soothing.
DIY tip: Mix your exfoliant with a little oil (such as olive or coconut oil). Add one drop of essential oil if desired.
Step 3: Toning - Light, Fresh & Balancing
A toner helps remove any remaining residue after cleansing and prepares your skin for moisture.
- Rose water: Hydrating and soothing
- Cucumber juice: Cooling and refreshing
- Aloe vera gel (diluted): Calming and supportive
- Vegetable glycerin (diluted): Lightweight hydration
Step 4: Moisturizing - DIY or Ready-Made
Moisturizing is essential for maintaining healthy, resilient skin.
Easy natural options
- Jojoba oil - great for most skin types
- Sweet almond oil - calming and softening
- Avocado oil - deeply nourishing
- Rosehip oil - lightweight and rejuvenating
Butters & waxes
- Shea butter - ideal for dry or sensitive skin
- Beeswax - helps seal in moisture
When You Don’t Want to Make Everything Yourself
As mentioned earlier in this post, a natural routine isn’t about doing everything yourself. DIY can be empowering, but balance matters.
Some products, such as a well-formulated face cream, are harder to make at home without the right ingredients, tools, and time. This is where high-quality natural brands become incredibly valuable.
One brand that truly stands out is Weleda. Weleda is a well-established and highly respected German brand with over 100 years of experience in natural and holistic skincare. Their products are created with deep respect for nature and the skin, using carefully selected plant-based ingredients.
If you’re looking for a simple and reliable moisturizer, one that I especially recommend is Weleda Skin Food Light. It’s a lightweight yet nourishing moisturizer that works beautifully all year round - whether it’s summer or winter. It absorbs quickly, provides lasting hydration, and works well both day and night.
Weleda is a great example of a company showing how you can choose natural skincare without needing to make everything from scratch.
Hydration & Skin Health
Healthy skin isn’t only about what you apply on the outside. Staying hydrated supports your skin’s natural functions and overall appearance. Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day and adjust based on your lifestyle and environment.
